Civil Engineering Technology

The Civil Engineering Technology program provides the application of relevant theory of engineering needed by technicians to carry out planning and supervisory tasks in the construction of transportation systems, residential and commercial buildings, bridges, dams, and water and waste-water treatment.

What You Will Learn

Coursework includes the communication and computational skills required to support the fields, such as environmental technology and surveying. Additional coursework will cover the operation of computers and application software, including computer-aided drafting.

Student Outcomes

1. an ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve well-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;
2. an ability to design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the engineering design of systems, components, or processes appropriate to the discipline;
3. an ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in well-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature;
4. an ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results; and
5. an ability to function effectively as a member of a technical team.

Graduates find jobs with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, general and specialty contractors, engineering materials testing laboratories, engineering material suppliers, engineering material fabricators, commercial and residential developers, consulting engineering companies, municipalities, and environmental firms. Graduates may become North Carolina licensed general or specialty contractors and operate their own businesses.
