Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology
You have a knack for all-things-cars. You are observant and understand the role behind every automobile part, and are great at using tools. Earn an Associate of Applied Science or a diploma in collision repair and refinishing technology from Central Piedmont. There are several certificates available, too, with specializations in painting and refinishing, collision repair, and autobody estimating.
What You Will Learn
In our Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology program, you will familiarize yourself with industry standards and federal, state, and local regulations to perform non-structural and structural repairs. You will learn about electrical, suspension and steering, brake, heating and air conditioning, and other principles of vehicle functions as well as about paint finishings, plastics, adhesives, and other materials. You will study the construction of the automobile body and techniques of repairing, rebuilding, and refinishing. The coursework includes collision repair fundamentals, industry overview and safety You will use methods —such as MIG welding — and operate equipment to complete repairs, diagnostic, alignments, and refinishing tasks safely. You will learn about and will analyze vehicle damage and produce and interpret damage estimation reports. Upon completion of the program, you will be able to:
- analyze and perform repairs to structural damage, prepare and interpret a damage estimate report, and demonstrate an understanding of working in the industry through an internship program
- identify and use proper equipment and materials to perform spot, panel, and overall finishing repairs, including repair and replacement of automotive plastic components, and to apply specialized finishes, all in accordance with industry standards
- identify, repair (by welding or otherwise) and replace direct and indirect damage, including structural damage, to body panels, to movable glass and hardware, all in accordance with industry standards
Graduates are eligible to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. and qualify for entry-level positions in the collision repair and refining industry, such as collision repair technicians, in autobody shops, dealerships, and garages. You may also become self-employed.

Students enrolled in the collision repair and refinishing technology program are required to complete an internship. As they practice hands-on repairs, our students connect themselves to future employers and develop important work experiences. The facilities you will learn in include four down-draft paing booths, a laser and sonar driven frame machine, a computerized paint mixing room, and structural and non-structural labs. The program’s curriculum is based off of the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (ICAR). You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Skills USA - Automotive student organization.
